The People’s Palace: The Story of Bradford’s New Vic

Description

The Beatles played here, as did The Rolling Stones, and now you can discover the incredible story of the former Bradford Odeon in this revealing talk about one of the city’s most beloved buildings.

Join Mark Nicholson, author of The People’s Palace: The Story of Bradford’s New Vic, as he tells the story of the Bradford Odeon. It’s a fascinating tale full of big names, highs and lows, and how this famous city landmark was saved from demolition.

The book charts its history from its construction on a former brewery site in 1929 to its life as a popular cinema and much-lamented closure in 2000. Mark interviewed former staff, including projectionists, a ballroom disc jockey and a theatre organist, to help bring the story of the building to life. It’s a story with a happy ending as next year this iconic building will reopen as Bradford Live, an exciting new, 3,800-capacity venue.

Born in 1969, Mark Nicholson’s affinity with Bradford’s former Odeon building was sealed in February 1978 when he was captivated by the legendary mirror ball sequence that introduced the first Star Wars film.

Neither the home video boom of the 1980s or luxurious 1990s multiplexes lured Mark away, which undoubtedly fuelled his relentless campaign work as a member of the Bradford Odeon Rescue Group after the cinema closed in 2000 and faced a very real threat of demolition.
