Some say it’s grim up north but these Northern crime writers have kept us on the edge of our seats with their gritty thrillers. To find out why our region has become such a compelling creative muse to so many crime writers, we’re inviting a panel of authors whose page-turning works all feature a northern noir backdrop.
Featuring a stellar lineup of A.A. Dhand, JR Ellis, Liz Mistry and Helen Cox, this intimate evening celebrates an array of Yorkshire writing talent at the historic Sunbridge Wells. So grab yourself a drink, settle in and join your favourite crime authors for an evening of noir readings, conversation and guaranteed black humour.

About the Authors
Liz Mistry
Liz Mistry, moved to Yorkshire the late ’80s, She crafts gritty crime fiction rooted in Bradford. Childhood tales from Scotland infuse her work with intrigue, inspiring her latest series set in West Lothian. Battling clinical depression and anxiety, she intertwines mental health themes into her narratives, influenced by her MA in Creative Writing from Leeds Trinity University. Completing a doctorate in creative writing, she explores representation in her beloved genre. Supported by her husband, three children, and a vast British Indian family, Liz finds solace in Scottish and Yorkshire landscapes, travel, music, and blogging on crime fiction.
J. R. Ellis
John R. Ellis has lived in Yorkshire for most of his life and has spent many years exploring Yorkshire’s diverse landscapes, history, language and communities. He has concentrated on writing since he retired from his career in teaching, mostly in further education in the Leeds area. In addition to the Yorkshire Murder Mystery series, he writes poetry, ghost stories and biography. He has completed a screenplay about the last years of the poet Edward Thomas and a work of faction about the extraordinary life of his Irish mother-in-law. He is currently working on his memoirs of growing up in a working-class area of Huddersfield in the 1950s and 1960s. He is the chairperson of the Otley Writers and contributes to their regular anthologies of prose and verse.
Helen Cox
Helen Cox is a Yorkshire-born novelist and poet. After completing her MA in creative writing at the University of York St. John Helen wrote for a range of magazines and websites as well as writing news and features for TV and radio. Helen edited her own independent film magazine for five years and has penned three non-fiction books. Her first two novels were published by HarperCollins in 2016. She currently hosts The Poetrygram podcast and coordinates poetry and non-fiction courses at City Lit, London. Helen’s new series of cosy mysteries stars librarian-turned-sleuth Kitt Hartley, and is set in York.

A.A. Dhand
A.A. Dhand was raised in Bradford and spent his youth observing the city from behind the counter of a small convenience store. The history, diversity and darkness of the city have inspired his Harry Virdee novels. The Blood Divide is his first standalone thriller.
