And while they went on to find fame on the field, he made his name writing and talking about sport. His new memoir, My Sporting Life, is a captivating love letter to the heroes and legends that inspired him.
Parkinson will regale us with fascinating anecdotes and stories about his encounters with some of the biggest names in sports.
During a glittering career spanning more than 50 years, this doyen of TV interviewing has sparred, verbally at least, with Muhammad Ali, and been dazzled by George Best. In this not-to-be-missed event, Parkinson shares stories and anecdotes from the many icons of sport that he’s met and reflects on a life writing about his greatest passion.

Sir Michael Parkinson
Michael Parkinson was honoured for his work in three different branches of the media by being also named Sports Writer of the Year and winning the first of four National Television Awards in the Best Talk Show category, a new series of Parkinson having just been launched by the BBC. A BAFTA followed in 1999, and in June 2000 he was awarded a CBE and made a Fellow of the British Film Institute. The BFI also named Parkinson as one of the top ten British TV programmes of all time. He was awarded a knighthood for services to broadcasting in the 2008 New Years’s honours and started his production company in 2008. He is an author of several books including his best selling autobiography Parky published in 2008.
