13:30 – 14:30 Roundtable Sessions

Culture and Censorship

Join Javaad Alipoor, Carlos Andrés Gómez, and chair Alexandra Pringle for a roundtable discussion on culture and censorship, where we explore the intersection of culture, freedom, and regulation. We will discuss how cultural works provoke thought, challenge societal norms, and face censorship, as artists and funding bodies navigate the balance between expression and restriction.

We’ll delve into who decides who gets to speak and what we can talk about, examining the linkage to funding and its impact on the reputations of individuals and organisations. The parameters of what has traditionally been seen as acceptable are shifting and undergoing transformation—how do you keep up with this and ensure that you are up to speed with the shifting paradigm?

Additionally, we will explore the balance between de-platforming and the acceptance that, while something may not be for everyone, everyone has a right to freedom of speech. We will also question whether there are any limits to this freedom and how do these limits get defined.

New Normal: Navigating The Financial Landscape

The UK economy faces significant challenges, and despite being identified as a priority sector, budgets for the creative industries have continued to decline, with grant-in-aid and lottery funding for the arts decreasing by £178 million between 2010 and 2023.

Funding cuts have resulted in a smaller pool of funds, forcing arts organisations to aggressively adapt their approaches to fundraising and sponsorship amidst increasing competition and scrutiny of private funding sources.

Join David Bryan and chair Kamran Rashid for this essential roundtable discussion as our expert panel of funders explores the challenges of the current financial landscape in the creative industries and discusses new opportunities, non-traditional approaches and new ways to market.

The Future of AI in the Creative Industries

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing our lives, from the way we create art to how we consume media. As AI becomes more integrated into the creative sector, it’s important to consider both the potential it offers and the ways to preserve the essence of human creativity.

Join Professor Hassan Ugail, Dr Asif Kasim, Daanish Masood Alavi and chair Jared Shurin for an enlightening roundtable discussion to explore the evolving relationship between AI and the creative sector.

How To Have a Portfolio Career

The landscape of portfolio careers has changed, becoming more accessible with increased opportunities, but also presenting new challenges. What was once consulting or freelancing between a few positions has evolved into managing your own around-the-clock business, from generating leads and managing clients to juggling multiple projects and updating website and social media content.

Joined by seasoned freelancers Afra Atiq, Smita Tharoor, Peg Alexander and chair Costas Kalisperas we will explore the challenges, strategies, and future prospects for individuals navigating what for a growing army of creatives is fast becoming the new world of freelancing.

14:30 – 15:30 Is EDI Dead?

Great Hall

Join David Bryan and Aaqil Ahmed for an engaging discussion on “Is EDI Dead?” as we examine whether the strategies of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in the creative industries are fit for purpose. Despite grand schemes and lots of words, high staff turnover and the lack of senior representation suggest EDI initiatives may not be as effective as many hoped.

We’ll explore why EDI in the creative sector seems to be struggling and ask what needs to change. Is it possible to move the dial or are structural inequalities too entrenched? Hear from industry experts about their ideas on what has gone wrong and what should come next. Don’t miss this critical conversation on the future of EDI in our industries.

15:30 – 16:30 Networking Drinks

Richmond Eatery

Finish the day over a drink to cement your new connections, unpack the wealth of learnings, and celebrate your contributions to our creative economic landscape.

Be sure to share highlights of your day by tagging @bradfordlitfest #CreativeEconomicConference
