Description
You’ll know her songs, but do you know the stories behind them? Two-time Grammy winner, Corinne Bailey Rae, returns to her Yorkshire roots for a special night celebrating her latest album, Black Rainbows.
Inspired by her visit to Stoney Island Arts Bank, a cathedral of Black art in Chicago, and meeting with the celebrated artist, Theaster Gates, who created the space, Corinne was transformed, as was her work. The result is Black Rainbows, a deep exploration of generational truth and the long arm of history.
This is a night like no other. Prepare to be immersed in the resonances of Black Rainbows as Corinne offers a glimpse into her chrysalis transformation and shares the intimate stories that shaped each song.
This event is co-produced with the British Library as part of Beyond the Bassline: 500 Years of Black British Music.
Beyond the Bassline: 500 Years of Black British Music runs until Monday 26 August at the British Library in London. You can also get a taster of the exhibition at a pop-up display featured at Bradford City Hall, Friday 28 June – Sunday 7 July.
About the Musician
Corinne Bailey Rae
Leeds native Corinne Bailey Rae is a two-time Grammy Award-winning musician, best known for her eponymous album Corinne Bailey Rae and her 2006 single Put Your Records On. Black Rainbows is her fourth album, the result of several years’ conversation between Bailey Rae and the objects and happenings in the Stoney Island Arts Bank, Chicago, transformed by artist Theaster Gates into a cathedral of Black Art. The resulting 10-track album is a testament to Stoney Island Arts Bank, to the long arm of history, the power of the collection in pushing artists to become their most expressive selves, and the depth of Bailey Rae’s gifts as a songwriter and vocalist.
