We’ve brought together Lauren Beukes, author of bestselling novel, The Shining Girls, whose work straddles the speculative and literary, and celebrated crime author John Connolly, best known for his PI Charlie Parker series, to share their best tips and tricks to convey authenticity in storytelling.
Conveying a strong sense of place is vital for a reader to know where they are, when they are, what’s going on in the wider written world and why. Whether you’re a writer yourself or you just enjoy being immersed in a good book, our authors will reveal their secrets for creating immersive scene settings and worlds.
About the Author
Charlotte Bradman
Charlotte Bradman is a working-class writer, artist, poet and occasional singer from Keighley, West Yorkshire. She has a BA Hons in Fine Art from Bradford College, is a keen advocate of outdoor swimming and lives in a campervan. After a volatile and turbulent childhood and young adulthood complicated further by booze and drugs, Charlotte eventually found solace in mindfulness, long distance hiking, and throwing herself frequently into freezing cold water. Her debut book, The Happy Nomad, is both a memoir and a manifesto, urgently questioning the status quo of the world we live in, re-framing trauma, and looking in-depth at our relationship with material things.
About the Chair
Peg Alexander
Peg Alexander is a Leeds based award winning broadcaster, presenter, and journalist across TV, radio, podcasts and events. A colourful, warm, optimistic northerner, she’s all about the world we live in and life in general – people, politics, the planet, and cake. She‘s a regular on shows including Jeremy Vine on 5 and previously Steph’s Packed Lunch, and is often heard on national radio putting her twopenneth in.
Broadcasting is her 2nd career. Before moving into the media she was a charity CEO and was senior in public policy. She was also founding Director of Bradford’s UNESCO status as the world’s first City of Film. She now combines both careers.
She’s written 2 books – one on how to keep weight off long term and is currently finishing a travel-inspired memoir.
