About the Speakers
Salman Shaikh
Salman Shaikh is the Founder and CEO of The Shaikh Group (TSG), a specialised peace-building organisation dedicated to mitigating and resolving violent conflict, with a focus on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Shaikh has extensive experience leading mediation and Track II diplomacy initiatives with local actors, governments, and key international actors – with a focus on Syria, the broader Levant, the Gulf region and Iran. Before establishing TSG, Shaikh was the director of the Brookings Institution’s Doha Center, where his research focused on conflict resolution, domestic policy, and geopolitics of the Middle East. Shaikh previously worked the United Nations in a number of offices. Shaikh also served as director for policy and research in the private office of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bin Nasser al-Missned, the Consort of the former Emir of the State of Qatar.
Daanish Masood Alavi
With over 20 years of experience in conflict and technology, Daanish Masood Alavi is collaborating with top AI labs, embedding global values, legal codes, and ethics into AI systems. For 16 years, Daanish served the United Nations. Starting in the Secretary-General’s office, he later co-led a UN innovation unit, applying cutting-edge technologies to peacemaking use cases in conflict zones. Previously, he supported Security Council missions in the Middle East and helped establish an evidence gathering mission to document ISIL’s atrocities in Iraq. Recognitions include the Geospatial Excellence Award for a pioneering satellite system aimed at measuring water diminishment and directing a VR film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Daanish co-founded the VR collective BeAnotherLab and was an affiliate at MIT’s Arts, Culture and Technology program. He holds degrees in analytic philosophy and Middle East Studies.

Dr Myriam François
Dr Myriam Francois is an award-winning journalist, filmmaker, and presenter whose work spans television, documentary, and digital media. A former host of The Stream on Al Jazeera English, she now presents the acclaimed current affairs YouTube show The Tea with Myriam Francois. Her documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, and Al Jazeera have been widely praised, and her directorial debut Finding Alaa (BBC/CBC) premiered at Hot Docs and the Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo, was selected for BAFTA consideration, and won Best Documentary at Flicker Fest 2024. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Oxford and speaks internationally on journalism under fire, civil liberties, feminism, and Islamophobia.
